CCF Digestive Tea

CCF tea is one of the most well known Ayurvedic recipes out there. It was one of the first ones that I learned during my Ayurveda training.

I remember the first time I tried CCF tea. It was in the middle of the summer and I was at my Ayurvedic school (located at the Himalayan Institute in the beautiful Poconos Mountains in PA), and it was HOT outside. Like, blazing hot. And if you know this school, you know that they do not have AC in the summer.

We made it for one of our projects and honestly, the last thing I wanted was hot tea during the middle of the summer while inside a hot building with no AC.

The first sip I took I thought it tasted like a liquid taco (thanks to the cumin seeds!). It was a very strange, unfamiliar taste, but I drank all of my cup. A few minutes later, I noticed that I wasn’t hot anymore! I felt nice and cool on the inside, and the outside didn’t feel unbearably hot anymore!

I later learned that one of the ways this tea works is to tame Pitta. It lowers the heat in the body and your reaction to any external heat (whether it be temperature or just a stressful “heated” situation). It also works with Vata in helping to ease any gas or bloating that you may be experiencing, and it also works with Kapha to ease and aid in getting the digestive process going.

CCF tea is famous in Ayurveda for a good reason! Making a large thermos of this tea and sipping it throughout the day is definitely going to help more than just your digestion.

Ingredients Used:

The ingredients needed are simple and straightforward-

Cumin Seeds- Cumin seeds are balancing for all 3 doshas and contain the tastes bitter and pungent. Cumin seeds are warming in nature.

Coriander Seeds- Coriander seeds have a cooling quality to them, and help to pacify Pitta. They have a sweet, bitter, and astringent taste to them.

Fennel Seeds- Fennel seeds are cooling, they are great for balancing all 3 doshas, and have a sweet, bitter, and pungent taste to them.

Equipment Used:

You don’t need a lot of fancy equipment to make CCF tea. All that is needed is-

Mortar and Pestle (optional)
